Contract signed for hydrocarbon exploration in the Ionian - fracking is forbidden

ATHENS. This was announced by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Giorgos Stathakis at the signing of the contract for the concession of exploration rights in the Ionian area.

The signatures of Mr. Stathakis and the consortium of Hellenic Petroleum and the Spanish REPSOL bring the contract phase of proceedings to a conclusion and we now move on to the phase of exploratory drilling.

At the signing of the contract for exploratory drilling in the Ionian Sea had been signed the Minister for the Environment and Energy Giorgos Stathakis announced that the extraction of hydrocarbons by fracking was forbidden.

Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) has provoked strong reactions in the regions around the world where it has been used due to its effects on the environment and the water table.

Mr. Stathakis stated that Greece has the strictest environmental legislation, based on the 2013 EU Directive and stressed that further initiatives will be taken to protect the environment including the forbidding of fracking. He pointed out that the existing legislation provides for strict controls to protect against and deal with any threats. Natura areas will remain untouched.

Exploratory drilling in the Ionian Sea will be carried out by the consortium of Hellenic Petroleum and the Spanish company REPSOL. Following the signatures, the contracts for the Ionian and the regions to the west and northwest of Crete will go to the Court of Auditors before being submitted to Parliament for ratification.
