Corfu Municipality took part in the UNESCO Monuments conference in Rhodes.

RHODES. Corfu Municipality was invited to attend the conference organized by Rhodes Municipality which took place 2 - 4 November.

The conference took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Rhodes Medieval Town being listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Corfu was represented by Deputy Mayor for Palaiokastritsa and Phaeaces and President of DOPAP Nikos Korakianitis.

Also present at the conference were Kotor, Montenegro; Split, Croatia; Valetta, Malta; Limassol, Cyprus and Byblos, Lebanon.

There was discussion and concern at the conference about the sustainable development of towns that have been declared World Cultural Heritage Sites. The following sessions were held: "Investing in Global Heritage", "Adoption of a strategy and methodology for the conservation, management and sustainable development of historical towns" and "Vision for a sustainable future".

Mr. Korakianitis presented Corfu's experience, with special reference to the Conservation Plan and the Regulation for Urban Operation in the conditions created by traffic, cruise ships and Airbnb.

The establishment of a Network of Cultural Heritage Port-Towns regarding over-tourism and cruise tourism was discussed and put in motion.

The following were present at the conference: Deputy Minister for Marine and Island Policy Nektarios Santorinios; Junior Minister for Culture and Sport Konstantinos Stratis; President of KINAL Fofi Gennimata; Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas; Dodecanese Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos; General Secretary of the World Cultural Heritage Site Towns Organization Denis Ricard; UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Dr. Maha El-Khalil Chalabi and representatives from the Dodecanese Antiquities Inspectorate and the Metsovio Technical University.
