CORFU. ΄War΄ has broken out over the roadworks at the Solari section of Eth. Palaiokastritsas Rd.

There are intense arguments about the issue on social media as well. On Wednesday morning there were protests at the section of the road near the junction with Potamos where a central barrier is being constructed. Shop owners and local residents are complaining about the work being done on the road because U-turns will not be possible, thus preventing easy access to their businesses. They claim that the study for the work was done in 1993 and didn't include the buildings and businesses which now exist in the area.

Deputy Regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi has responded to the protests by saying that the study was updated and approved and is being done in the best interests of pedestrian and road safety - something which everyone should understand.

On the other hand, last summer frustrated members of the public and shop owners sent a letter to the Traffic Police requesting that something be done about the anarchy that exists in the traffic there and the Deputy Regional Governor for Natural Resources, Energy and Manufacturing Dionysis Tsoukas met with a delegation of residents at his office who wanted to know when "order would finally be brought to the existing chaos"!

Central barrier

The plans for the roadworks being carried out at Solari include the construction of a central barrier where possible and where it is not possible to have double lines with small plastic bollards. The aim is to prevent U-turns at any point along the road where there are accidents on a daily basis - sometimes with serious injuries. Turns in the opposite direction will only be possible at the roundabouts at Kefalomantouko and Alykes (Ekati) or at Capukines, going round Platytera.

Traffic lights

According to Dionysis Tsoukas just before the work began, in order to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and to prevent accidents there will be traffic lights at the junction with Lofo Koyevina (Dimitra supermarket), at the Kefalomantouko junction and at the Potamos junction. Between the Potamos and Kefalomantouko junctions there will be a pedestrian crossing with lights which will operate with a button.

Other features included in the plan

- Pedestrian crossings
- Completion of the rainwater drainage network
- Safety railings at pedestrian crossings and bus stops
- Completion of street lighting, road surfacing and signage (road signs, road markings and reflectors)
- Repairs to damaged rainwater drains between Potamos and Tzavros junctions
