CORFU. The Skorpios Island owner΄s representative met with the Ionian Islands Regional Governor.

Sergei Tsernitsin, advisor and representative for the Russian magnate Dmitry Rybolovlev - owner of Skorpios Island - met with the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos last week.

Mr. Tsernitsin updated Mr. Galiatsatos on the 184m Euro development of 10,000 sq.m. on Skorpios which will begin in October and thanked him for the support offered in helping overcome bureaucratic hurdles and the positive response to the investment programme.

They also discussed the common concern of the Russian magnate and the Regional Administration to protect the environment and Dmitry Rybolovlev's interest in supporting the completion of a NATURA 2000 environmental study by the Region in Lefkada and Meganisi. The matter has already been discussed with the Deputy Regional Governor for Lefkada Theodoros Halikias who had made the proposal, bearing in mind the interest of Mr. Rybolovlev.

The Regional Governor concluded that collaboration was possible regarding the protection of the environment. He also proposed that, based on the study, the Region could set up a Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) office in the Ionian Islands based in Lefkada.

"It would interesting for this to extend to the whole of the marine region of the Ionian. We would like there to be ongoing research and monitoring to see how biodiversity is developing in the Ionian and specifically in the areas mentioned and we are considering establishing a permanent HCMR office based in Lefkada," said Mr. Galiatsatos.

Mr. Tsernitsin told the Regional Governor that the Rybolovlev family is willing to take initiatives in the wider region and following the research would like to collaborate with the Region in drawing up a plan of action for the protection of the environment.

"We can support initiatives in the wider area around Lefkada and Meganisi and would like there to be collaboration between the Rybolovlev family and the Ionian Islands Regional Administration at this level as well," said Mr. Tsernitsin.

Mr. Galiatsatos stated that, "This will be a benedicial development for the area and will improve Lefkada and the whole Ionian region. Whatever happens has to be done with respect for the environment and we can work together in this way."

Referring to the protection of the environment, Mr. Galiatsatos reminded Mr. Tsernitsin that there has already been collaboration with regard to the special environmental evaluation of Skorpios and the strategic plan which has been submitted will be examined and discussed at the next Regional Council meeting.

Deputy Regional Governor for Energy and the Environment  Dionysis Tsoukas also took part in the discussion between the Regional Governor and the representative of the Russian magnate. Mr. Tsoukas referred to the future plans of the Regional Administration to create a sea aquarium in Lefkada similar to the one in Crete, which will be maintained by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and which will show the unique marine biodiversity of the Ionian Islands.
