Ferry strike ends - seamen to receive 2% pay rise

ATHENS. Ferries began resuming itineraries immediately.
The Executive Committee of the Hellenic Seamen΄s Federation (PNO) has decided to immediately suspend their strike following the proposal from the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) for a 2% pay rise in 2018 both for the shipping collective agreement and Mediterranean tourist ships.
The seamen accepted SEEN's new proposal of 2% retrospective pay rise dating from 1/1/2018 and new negotiations at a later date for 2019.
In a statement, the PNO board said that the shipowners' proposal "to a degree satisfies the Federation's demand for real pay rises", but "being fully aware of our responsibilities and wishing once again to be amenable, we decided to end the strike immediately."
"The seamen, however, await tangible solutions from those in government and the employers in response to the Federation's proposals regarding the remaining problems.
Social security and other labour matters are priorities and require immediate solutions," stressed the PNO, who also thanked passengers, "the great majority of whom understand and support for our just demands."
