Lefkimmi residents continue to press charges against the Mayor and Deputy Mayor

CORFU. "We want answers," demanded the residents of Lefkimmi at the marathon Council meeting which eventually ended at 3:30 in the morning.
Their questions were mainly in regard to the contents of the waste bales but also about the piles of rubbish that a member of the public photographed. The findings of the team of experts regarding the contents of the bales have been published but according to the Deputy Mayor for Cleansing they hadn't been received by the time the meeting started.
As the Council President had promised, representatives from all the residents' organizations were allowed to speak as well as some individual members of the public who had requested to express their views. They spoke mainly about the photographs which showed that not only had the bales been deposited there, but rubbish had also been deposited in bulk at the landfill. The photos wer passed around before being given to the Council President.
Charged atmosphere
Once again there were protests and things got heated but it didn't lead to the break-up of the meeting this time - there was a short break just to let things cool down. The main point that the residents stressed was that a crime has been committed in Lefkimmi with a landfill that should never have been built and should never go into operation.
They also spoke of the damage to the environment, the dangers to public health and the economic damage to the island. The Secretary of Lefkimmi Cultural Society, Mr. Pandis, made it known that he had pressed charges for a second time against the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Cleansing for damage to the environment. He wondered why they had not already been arrested.

The Mayor replied that he didn't know how the bulk rubbish had been dumped at the site as what the contractor transports is monitored and checked by the police. He didn't discount the possibility that some of the bales had broken open but promised that the matter would be looked into immediately.
