CORFU. 1831 - The Adam aqueduct starts operating, bringing fresh water to the town.
1807: Following the Treaty of Tilsit, the first French soldiers land in Corfu at the beginning of the second period of French occupancy, which lasted until 1814 and was part of what was called the French Imperialist period.
1831: The Adam aqueduct starts operating, solving the towns' water supply problem. Sir Frederick Adam was the second Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands following Maitland, whom he succeeded on 10 April, 1821.
He commissioned the the first aqueduct, which served the town for over a century, and the major part of the pre-Union road network. Adam married a Corfu woman and began the construction of the Mon Repos Palace which was to be the High Commissioner's summer residence but which was never, in fact, used as such.
He remained Lord High Commissioner until 10 April 1832, when he was sent to India as Governor of Madras. After five years he fell ill and resigned - returning to Italy. He died on 17 April, 1853.
The statue of Adam in the gardens of the Old Palace was created by the sculptor Pavlos Prosalentis, who died before he could see it placed in position.
