LONDON. Long article in the Travel Section of the Daily Telegraph.

The article was written by Anastasia Niari and has photos showing piles of rubbish on roads and beaches. The article, which has the title 'Riot police deployed as Corfu 's rubbish nightmare escalates', describes the deadlock in the waste management situation ove the last few years and focusses on the illegalities at Lefkimmi landfill. It paints a negative picture of what is happening on the island talks about tourists' and residents' fears now that the riot police are here.

Amongst others, it includes the comments of a 19-year-old tourist from Leeds who says, "Driving into Kavos late at night we saw a police diversion, which was really scary, and our taxi driver didn’t know where he was going. He said we had to take another route into Kavos because the army were here. It’s definitely off-putting and not a relaxing start to the holiday."

The article also quotes the British wife of Lefkimmi Cultural Society's secretary Yiannis Pandis. "Our daughter was taken from outside of our home by undercover police and kept in a cell overnight, alone and in the dark for no reason other than that she is Yiannis’s daughter. They insisted we go and see her locked up in a cell, so I know the motive behind it was to threaten us."!
