Cuban Ambassador in Corfu to discuss cultural and academic exchanges

CORFU. The Ambassador spoke to Enimerosi about the purpose of the diplomatic visit.
The Cuban Ambassador in Greece Zelmys Maria Dominguez Cortina visited the Old Town Hall yesterday as part of her two-day visit to Corfu. The Ambassador was welcomed by Council President Maria Mouzakiti as the Mayor was in Athens.
The Cuban Consul General in Athens José Oriol Marrero Martinez accompanied the Ambassador and Deputy Mayor for Tourism Vassilis Kavadias and local councillor Manos Raptis were also present.
To begin with, Ms Dominguez Cortina said that the Greek and Cuban people had a lot in common, especially their love and their struggles for freedom. "I consider the time to be right to build closer ties," she said. For this reason, she is visiting several Greek towns to meet with the local authorities and create Greek-Cuban friendship associations - something that will happen in Corfu.
The Ambassador went on to say that Cuba is interested in promoting cultural, educational, tourist and business relations and as a first step proposed the hosting of a Cuban photography exhibition which has already been to Athens and Lefkada. She also said that Greece took part for the first time last year in Cuba's annual Business Fair and that the Greek Minister for Tourism Elena Kountoura is expected in Havana in September.
The Council President passed on greetings from the Mayor, who couldn't be present due to committments in Athens, and thanked the Ambassador for her visit to Corfu and her kind words. She agreed that the two peoples had a lot in common and happily accepted the proposal for a photography exhibition (which will probably be held at the Municipal Art Gallery). She also talked about the collaboration between the Municipality and the Ionian University in the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting - something in which Ms Dominguez Cortina was particularly interested in as this doesn't exist in Cuba - and suggested to the Ambassador that they should look at the possibility of Corfu twinning with a Cuban town.
Finally, the Deputy Mayor for Tourism told the Ambassador about the Corfu Food & Wine Festival, which took place for the first time this year, and invited Cuba to take part in the next one.
