CORFU. The Ionian University Department of Audio & Visual Arts, as part of the 12th Festival of Audiovisual Arts and in collaboration with Corfu Municipal Art Gallery, is putting on an exhibition of the works of the artist Rob Kesseler - opening on Wednesday 30th May.

In his work, Rob Kesseler combines scientific technology with an artistic perspective in order to highlight the tiny dimensions of plants.

The ‘Genus’ exhibition includes a new body of work inspired by the artist’s personal collection of printed woodcuts by the Italian botanist Pietro Mattholi dating from 1568. Based on samples of hellebore, daffodil, iris, ribwort and chives which Kesseler collected from around his workshop in Corfu, the exhibition creates a visual spectacle stimulating one’s interest and showing traditional botanic art in a more modern dimension, with the assistance of a broad range of techniques and media, such as video, photographs, drawings and woodcuts.

Using high-resolution microscopes at Kew Gardens in London, the material collected in Corfu - various pollen grains, seeds and leaves - is magnified thousands of times to create images with high colour-intensity that lie somewhere between science and symbolism.
