CORFU. Temploni Cultural Society calls on all interested parties to come forward with proposals.

Temploni Cultural Society is taking a different line from the other two Temploni organizations, which decided on Sunday to close the landfill, after gathering signatures in a petition.

President M. Papanikolopoulou stated categorically that Temploni Cultural Society has nothing to do with the actions and opinions of the other two new organizations, ‘Panayia Sparmiotissa’ and the ‘Residents Action Committee’. “We neither agree with nor wish to participate in any of their actions”, she said. It is telling that the oldest Temploni Society, which has been in existence for over ten years, has chosen to call for a separate public meeting on Sunday 25th February.

“We do not want to say anything ourselves - we have already done so repeatedly. We are going to call all Corfu organizations - the Chamber of Commerce, the Technical Chamber, the Business Association, professionals, hotel owners etc. – in order to hear their views.” At the same time, the Society’s President condemned the belated interest from the Corfu Hotel Owners, who sent a letter to the government asking them to “do everything possible” about the waste issue. “Now they call up the public health issue,” declared Ms. Papanikolopoulou, “after we have been shouting for so many years for them to look at the problem.”

Yet again, she held Mayor Nikolouzos and his local government responsible for the long delays and loss of valuable time which have led to the present impasse that Corfu finds itself in. “In Temploni, the situation is getting worse day by day and, unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an immediate way out.” Concerning the other Temploni organizations’ wish to close the landfill, Ms. Papanikolopoulou said that, “Whether or not the landfill here closes, Corfu will drown in garbage.”
