CORFU. The Federation of Entrepreneurs of Corfu Tourism Enterprises (OETK) claims that businesses are in danger of facing fines through no fault of their own.

The Federation has stated that, although they are legally obliged to charge overnight tax from January 1st, businesses have received no information regarding how it is to be applied or the accounting adjustments that need to be made.

The Federation’s announcement
From January 1st we are legally obliged to charge the overnight tax, despite the strong evidence-based reactions from those involved in the tourism industry regarding the problems that the tax will create.

From Monday 1st January our businesses are obliged to collect the tax and yet nobody knows how it will be collected or passed on. This is due to the fact that, up to now, we haven’t received a memo from the ministry outlining and clarifying the procedure and application of the new law.

Everybody involved, and especially the responsible ministry, knows that there are complicated accounting procedures that need to be adopted by businesses and up to now the ministry has kept us in dark. As a consequence, our businesses run the risk of facing fines without being in any way to blame.

For these reasons, we would like to request that the government consider the disruption and damage that the tourism industry will suffer with the new law and either withdraw it or at least delay its implementation for another 4 months until the proper information has been circulated and our businesses have the proper time to adapt to the new situation.
