Open Street Handball in Liston Square, Corfu

CORFU. «Be active for yourself, be active for others – Bring your friends to play». This is the slogan for the Open Street Handball games that will take place in the Upper Square next to Liston
and by the kiosk on Sunday 22 October. The games, which are for boys and girls aged 6 – 12, start at 10.30 and finish at 12.30. Organizers are the organization ‘For Children’s Rights’, which was established to support and fight for children’s rights.
‘For Children’s Rights’ was the initiative of a group of Corfu parents and residents when they heard of the imminent closure of the Paediatric Clinic at Corfu General Hospital. They took symbolic action by forming a human chain around the hospital – an action which, in fact, led to a solution being found to the problem.
One of the articles of the organization’s constitution is: ‘The organization of recreational, cultural and sports activities of an educational and philanthropic nature and with the participation of doctors, teachers, paediatricians, psychologists and health professionals’.
With this in mind, it was decided to organize an event to help the Corfu Special Primary School with educational and therapeutic materials to help both with learning and the psychokinetic development of pupils as well as new computers and a photocopying machine.
Another of the aims of ‘For Children’s Rights’ is to encourage children to play in their neighbourhoods again and spend less time on electronic games. The Open Street Handball is the first of a series of events to support this aim.
If children wish to participate, it is not necessary for them be familiar with the game or to be members of a sports club. Three local children’s handball clubs accepted the invitation to take part – Filia, Feax and Corfu Gymnastic Club. The instructors and coaches from these clubs will be available to give help to anyone that needs it.
There will be a registration table at the event. Throughout the event, to support the work of the Voluntary Bone Marrow Bank ‘Vision of Hope’, samples will be taken from anyone who would like to become a bone marrow donor.
